The Taste of Tradition, Tradition of Taste ("The Taste" Bar)

Restaurant: Smak, Bar

This Taste may still not be "everything" but their delicious food, quite a nice interior and reasonable prices is enough.

Taste... is everything. No matter whether I use real china tableware or a plate fixed to the table and a spoon chained to it. It should be either sweet or spicy. From time to time everybody needs to go back to the roots, to the taste of tradition. And there is nothing more traditional than a pork cutlet with potatoes and fried cabbage.

That day I felt hungry for tradition and since I was not far from Karmelicka Street I immediately made a decision where to eat. Not once or twice have I seen the long narrow room full of people; I knew that this is one of the places where serious businessmen sit  next to "yesterday's" amateurs of alcoholic beverages and where busy students chat with humble pensioners. Such a combination can result only in two effects: delicious food and low prices. In fact, The Taste Bar (or Bar Smak in polish) has got plenty of both.

It is a traditional Polish milk bar, but of higher standard. The last is mostly achieved by the interior. The whole room is in wood and walls are decorated with pottery, old beer barrels and pictures of Kraków from the past. The positive impression is spoiled by rather dirty tables. However, in such a busy place and with only one waitress it is unavoidable, I guess. Anyway, as for one-person staff she was doing very well, considering the fact that she had a lot on he hands starting from taking orders through delivering the food and cleaning after the customers.

Without thinking much I took one of the scarce empty seats and head for the counter to make my order. As I have already mentioned, it was a day of tradition and if there is something more traditional than a pork cutlet with potatoes and fried cabbage it can only be this same preceded by Polish broth with noodles. This was what I ordered.

Before I managed to take my place a plate or rather a bowl of broth was being carried to me. To be honest I have not expected too much of it and I took it only because it was in the dinner set. But what a nice surprise it was. First, you would never say that you were eating a melted stock cube or other type of instant soup. The taste recalled my grandmother

Light-hearted and sometimes silly, but also full of discrepancies. Loves creative work and concept thinking. Taste is everything. It should be sweet or hot. And if hot, with a lot of spices. Always intensive.
